What the reference describes.
Active learning is a special case of machine learning in which a learning algorithm can interactively query a human user (or some other information source) to label new data points with the desired outputs. The human user must possess expertise in the problem domain, including the ability to consult authoritative sources when necessary. In statistics literature, it is sometimes also called optimal experimental design. The information source is also called teacher or oracle.
What the process still cannot guarantee.
Selecting useful labels can exploit dataset artifacts while neglecting scientific identifiability.
That is a design criticism of how this research operation may be used, not a claim that the encyclopedia endorses the limitation. In this domain, the general redesign question is: mathematical, computational and semantic validation are separated into independent trust layers.
Replace the mechanism.
Choose samples and interventions for causal discrimination and domain coverage rather than score alone.
Implementation requires a typed scientific claim, explicit operational definitions, controlled access to evidence, an immutable record of relevant transformations, and independent checking appropriate to the kind of assertion. An AI-generated interpretation without those checks would reproduce the underlying failure at greater speed.
What would demonstrate improvement?
Benchmark active learners when correlations invert in unseen regimes.
Compare with a defined baseline under matched resources, keep evaluation cases independent of the system under test, and measure both false alarms and undetected errors. Publish any negative or inconclusive result as part of the same investigation record.
